Venezuela's Acting President Appeals for U.S. Talks

(MENAFN) Venezuela's acting president issued an urgent diplomatic appeal to Washington on Wednesday, calling for negotiations following American military operations that took place in early January.

Addressing the nation from the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, Delcy Rodriguez referenced recent telephone conversations she conducted with US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighting the longstanding historical ties between both countries.

Disputes between the two nations can be resolved by honoring international law and Venezuela's constitutional framework, she asserted, emphasizing diplomacy as the optimal resolution mechanism.

Rodriguez continued by stating that certain extremist factions attempted to leverage the US intervention to incite disorder throughout Venezuela, though she noted citizens responded to such provocations with maturity and self-control.

Following the US aerial bombardments and subsequent developments, the country has entered recovery mode with peace and stability now reestablished, she declared.

"The Venezuelan people want to preserve their sovereignty, safeguard national independence, peace and tranquility," she said.

"If there is one thing in which Venezuelans are united, it is that any controversy, any disagreement with the United States government must be addressed diplomatically, through political dialogue," she underscored.

Addressing the US military assault on Jan. 3—which involved precision strikes culminating in the seizure and extraction of President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores by US forces—Rodriguez stated "this attack constitutes a stain on our relations, and we must work diligently and respectfully to overcome our differences."

US authorities transported Maduro and Flores to New York City, where both entered not guilty pleas to narcotics and weapons-related charges.

Trump announced his administration would "run" Venezuela and its petroleum resources throughout a transitional phase.
